Funerals at The Church of St. Paul in the Desert

A closing rite of passage after the death of a loved one is a common practice in almost every religion and civilization and can be incredibly healing as one moves through the grief process. In the Episcopal tradition, a Funeral or Celebration of Life is a sacred liturgy rooted in hope, comfort, and God’s promise of resurrection. At The Church of St. Paul in the Desert, we accompany families and loved ones with compassion as we commend a life into God’s eternal care. Whether you are planning ahead or responding to a recent loss, our clergy and community are here to support you.

A Service of Resurrection Hope
The Burial Office from the Book of Common Prayer proclaims that life is changed, not ended. In every Funeral or Celebration of Life, we:

  • Give thanks for the life of the one who has died
  • Pray for all who grieve
  • Affirm the Christian hope that nothing can separate us from the love of God

Through Scripture, prayers, and music, the service holds together both the reality of grief and the promise of new life in Christ.

Planning a Funeral or Celebration of Life
The clergy and staff at St. Paul’s will guide you through each step with clarity and care.

We can assist with:

  • Choosing readings, hymns, and prayers
  • Determining whether the service will include Holy Eucharist
  • Coordinating musicians and service participants
  • Preparing worship programs
  • Scheduling the service in the church or columbarium
  • Offering pastoral support throughout the process

Our goal is to create a service that honors your loved one’s life while reflecting the beauty and dignity of Episcopal worship.

Cremation, Burial, and Our Columbarium
The Episcopal Church affirms both burial and cremation as faithful Christian practices. If you choose inurnment in the columbarium at The Church of St. Paul in the Desert, we will walk you through the available options and next steps.

Pastoral Care for You and Your Family

Grief is a tender and sacred journey. Our clergy are available for:

  • Prayers at the time of death, including last rites (the sacrament of holy unction)
  • Pastoral conversations and visits
  • Support in making decisions about the service

You do not walk this path alone. St. Paul’s is a place of compassion, prayer, and solace.
