Speaking to the Dead

In this class, we will explore why characters throughout history try to reach beyond the grave—and what those encounters teach us about our own lives.

We will start with a ghost-summoning story in the Bible (1 Samuel), follow Odysseus as he travels to the Underworld to get advice from spirits in Homer’s Odyssey, and look at the strict divide between the living and the dead in Luke 16. Finally, we will jump to the 20th century to read the coastal California poetry of Robinson Jeffers. By looking at these different texts, we will see how stories about the afterlife are really just a way for us to figure out how to make the most of our time alive today.

SPEAKING OUT: 12 POEMS FOR PRIDE

Speaking Out: 12 Poems to Pride charts the emotional territory of LGBTQIA+ individuals— desire and delight, the quiet endurance of long partnership, spiritual belonging, humor, and gratitude — without dwelling on grief or loss. It affirms that queer love and joy have always existed, long before the world made room for them, and celebrates the particular privilege of having lived long enough to see that room widen. The evening will also honor resilience not as survival of hardship alone, but as an active, ongoing choice to love fully and stay unafraid. It closes by turning outward, in thanks — for community, for partnership, for the ordinary graces of a life arrived at, rather than merely endured.

Reclaiming the Text: A PRIDE Week Screening of 1946

For many people, the intersection of faith and LGBTQIA+ inclusion has been marked by confusion, pain, and difficult questions. What if one of the most influential biblical interpretations of the last century was rooted in a translation decision that deserves another look?

Join us at The Church of St. Paul in the Desert for a special PRIDE week screening of the acclaimed documentary 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted a Culture, followed by a thoughtful panel conversation exploring faith, Scripture, and the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ Christians. Whether you’re exploring these questions personally, supporting a loved one, or simply seeking to better understand the conversation, this evening is an opportunity to learn, listen, and engage with compassion.

Following the film, we’ll host a live conversation with special guest:

Colby Martin, Author of UNCLOBBERED, Rethinking Our Misuse of the Bible on Homoseuxuality

Who Should Attend?

  • LGBTQIA+ people seeking an affirming faith community.
  • Parents, family members, and friends.
  • Christians wrestling with questions about Scripture and inclusion.
  • Anyone who desires a deeper understanding of this important conversation.
