DESCRIPTION:Speaking to the Dead \nPeople have always wondered what it would be like to talk to the dead. In this class\, we will explore why characters throughout history try to reach beyond the grave—and what those encounters teach us about our own lives. \nWe will start with a ghost-summoning story in the Bible (1 Samuel)\, follow Odysseus as he travels to the Underworld to get advice from spirits in Homer’s Odyssey\, and look at the strict divide between the living and the dead in Luke 16. Finally\, we will jump to the 20th century to read the coastal California poetry of Robinson Jeffers.
